Missouri Wine Competition

2016 Missouri Wine Competition

MISSOURI: (STLRestaurant.News) – If you’re a winery producing wine anywhere in Missouri, you know that The Governor’s Cup is the highest honor you could receive at the Missouri Wine Competition.  The contest focuses on over 125 Missouri wineries in an effort to showcase the state’s fine wines, and as a way to further promote quality and awareness.  This year over 230 medals were awarded, reflecting the number of top quality wines produced right here in the Midwest.

This year, there were 308 wines entered from wineries across the state, and the coveted winner is St. James Winery’s 2015 Vignoles.  This esteemed wine also took home the title of Best Vignoles and Best of Class Semi-Dry White Wine.  Vignoles is a French-American hybrid grape and Missouri’s leading varietal white wine.  This multipurpose white grape produces a number of different wines including dry, sweet, and even dessert wines.  It gives off a luscious floral aroma and has a mix of fruity flavors of pineapple and apricot.

Noboleis Winery was awarded The C.V. Riley Award for Best Norton for its Noboleis Vineyards’ 2014 Norton.  The 2016 judging panel is made up of winemakers, sommeliers, journalists and retailers.  Each award is determined through the process of blind tastings.  The judges award Bronze, Silver and Gold medals for deserving wines.  The Gold medal winning Missouri wines compete for Best of Class awards.  All of the winning wines will be on exhibit at the 2016 Missouri State Fair, held in Sedalia, MO in August.

Below are the 2016 Best of Class winners:

  • Sparkling: Effervescent Mead, Pirtle Winery – Weston
  • Dry White: 2014 Vidal Blanc, Stone Hill Winery – Hermann
  • Semi-Dry White: 2015 Vignoles, St. James Winery – St. James
