Learn more about STL.News.

STL.News is an independent digital news publication based in the St. Louis metropolitan area and owned and operated by St. Louis Media, LLC. Founded in February 2016, STL.News publishes local, national, and international news and information for readers in St. Louis, across the United States, and around the world.

Our coverage includes St. Louis and Missouri news, business, financial markets, government, politics, legal and regulatory developments, technology, education, entertainment, lifestyle, restaurants and other topics of public interest.

Since its launch, STL.News has developed from a digital news publication with strong St. Louis roots into a broader news and information platform. Over its publishing history, STL.News has published more than 250,000 articles covering events, announcements and developments at the local, national and international levels.

Our Mission

The mission of STL.News is straightforward: to provide accurate, timely and accessible news and information that helps readers better understand the events and developments affecting their communities, businesses and lives.

We believe readers are best served by reporting that clearly distinguishes established facts from allegations, opinions, estimates and developing information.

Our goal is not simply to publish more information. It is to make useful information easier to find, understand and evaluate.

STL.News also recognizes the important role businesses, entrepreneurs, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and community institutions play in the economic and social health of the communities we cover. We report significant developments involving these organizations while maintaining clear distinctions between independent editorial coverage, submitted material, and commercial services.

Our History

STL.News began publishing in February 2016 from the St. Louis, Missouri, region.

The publication was founded during a period of rapid change in digital journalism. Readers increasingly received news through search engines, mobile devices, social media, and digital news platforms rather than exclusively through traditional newspapers, television, and radio.

STL.News was developed as a digital-first publication designed for that changing environment.

Over the years, the publication has expanded its subject matter and geographic reach. While St. Louis and Missouri remain important parts of our identity, STL.News also publishes U.S. and international news, financial market coverage, corporate developments, government announcements, court and regulatory news, and other information of interest to a broader readership.

Since beginning publication in 2016, STL.News has published more than 250,000 articles.

Our historical archive reflects the publication’s evolution, along with nearly a decade of news, corporate announcements, public records, government actions, and other developments.

Accuracy, Sources and Attribution

Accuracy is a fundamental editorial priority at STL.News.

Our reporting may draw from government agencies, court records, regulatory filings, corporate disclosures, law enforcement agencies, public records, financial data, direct statements, press releases and other credible sources.

The source appropriate for a particular article depends on the subject.

For example, securities and corporate reporting may rely heavily on filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and company disclosures. Legal reporting may rely on court documents and statements from the U.S. Department of Justice or other government agencies. Local reporting may involve municipal records, public agencies, businesses and individuals directly involved in an event.

STL.News seeks to attribute significant information to its source so readers can understand where important facts originated.

We also recognize the importance of distinguishing allegations from established facts. A lawsuit, criminal complaint, government investigation or regulatory allegation does not by itself establish wrongdoing.

Corrections and Updates

STL.News is committed to maintaining an accurate news record.

News develops, circumstances change, and new information becomes available after an article has been published. Articles may therefore be updated when significant new information becomes available.

When STL.News determines that an article contains a material factual error, we will review the matter and make an appropriate correction, clarification or update.

Minor typographical, grammatical or formatting changes that do not affect the substance of an article may be corrected without a formal correction notice.

Readers, businesses, government agencies, attorneys, sources and other interested parties who believe an STL.News article contains a factual error are encouraged to contact us and provide the specific information at issue and, when possible, supporting documentation.

Read our Corrections Policy for additional information about how STL.News handles correction requests, clarifications, updates and article-removal requests.

Editorial Leadership

Martin Smith is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of STL.News.

Smith oversees publication and content selection with help from a publishing team. He is also the founder and Editor in Chief of other digital publications operated within the St. Louis Media network.

STL.News believes readers should be able to identify who is responsible for the content they are reading. Author information is therefore provided with published articles where applicable, and additional information about contributors and editorial personnel is available through the STL.News Staff Directory.

Ownership and Transparency

STL.News is owned and operated by St. Louis Media, LLC, a Missouri-based digital media company.

Maintaining clear ownership information is an important part of our commitment to transparency. Readers should be able to determine who operates a news publication, who is responsible for its editorial direction, and how to contact the organization.

St. Louis Media, LLC operates STL.News and other digital publishing properties and services.

STL.News also provides commercial services that help support its publishing operations. These services include press release distribution, business directory listings, guest publishing opportunities and other digital publishing services.

Commercial services are separate from STL.News to accurately represent the information it publishes.

Where content is sponsored, submitted, provided through a commercial publishing arrangement, or reproduced from a press release, STL.News seeks to identify or categorize that material appropriately.

Businesses and organizations interested in these services can learn more through the STL.News Services section.

Press Releases and Submitted Information

Press releases are an important source of primary information from companies, government agencies, law firms, nonprofit organizations and other institutions.

STL.News publishes and reports on information originating from press releases and other submitted materials when the information is relevant to our readers.

A press release represents information provided by the issuing organization. Statements contained in a release should not automatically be interpreted as independent findings by STL.News.

When STL.News independently reports on information originating from a press release, we may supplement that information with public records, regulatory filings, market data, court records or other sources when appropriate.

STL.News also offers paid press release distribution and other commercial publishing services. The availability of those services does not mean that every company or organization appearing in STL.News is a customer, advertiser or commercial partner.

Technology and Our Publishing Process

STL.News is a digital-first publication and uses modern publishing technologies to gather, organize, research and publish information efficiently.

Our publishing process may incorporate software, automated systems, content feeds and artificial intelligence tools to assist with research, organization, editing and production.

Technology does not eliminate the need for editorial responsibility.

Content produced with the assistance of automated or artificial intelligence tools is subject to human editorial oversight, depending on the nature of the content and our publishing process. STL.News remains responsible for the material it publishes regardless of the technology used during production.

As publishing technology continues to evolve, STL.News will continue evaluating tools that can improve efficiency, accuracy, accessibility and the reader experience.

Our Commitment to St. Louis

Although STL.News reaches readers well beyond Missouri, St. Louis remains central to our identity.

We believe local journalism and local business coverage play important roles in strengthening communities.

St. Louis is home to major corporations, universities, healthcare institutions, cultural organizations, restaurants, entrepreneurs, small businesses and a diverse population whose activities frequently have significance beyond the metropolitan area.

STL.News seeks to document those developments while also giving readers access to important state, national, and international news.

Our goal is to help make information about St. Louis and Missouri more accessible to residents, businesses, visitors, researchers and readers around the world.

Part of the St. Louis Media Network

STL.News is part of a growing network of digital publications and information resources operated by St. Louis Media, LLC.

The network allows individual publications to focus on particular geographic areas, industries, and audiences while sharing publishing experience, technology, and infrastructure.

STL.News serves as one of the network’s primary general-news publications, combining its established St. Louis identity with national and international coverage.

Supporting Independent Digital Publishing

Operating a digital news publication requires ongoing investment in editorial resources, technology, website infrastructure, research, data, security, and distribution.

STL.News supports its operations through commercial publishing services and other revenue sources offered by St. Louis Media, LLC.

These commercial activities help support the continued operation and development of the publication while allowing readers to access STL.News content without a traditional subscription paywall.

Transparency regarding these activities is important to us. Information about commercial publishing and promotional services is available in the Services section rather than being incorporated into independent news coverage.
