Kirkwood’s Honey Pit Smokehouse for Both BBQ Foodies and the Health-Conscious BBQ Lover
KIRKWOOD, MO/December 31, 2017 (STL.News) Move over barbecue competitors…there’s a new kid in town. Honey Pit Smokehouse made its launch in Kirkwood a couple days before Christmas with very little fanfare. There was not so much as a peep on their Facebook and no notice on their web page but that didn’t seem to matter. The morning they opened for business at 11:00 a.m. guests began pouring in.
The restaurant, located at 951 S. Kirkwood Road (corner of Kirkwood Road and South Big Bend) replaces the building which formerly housed an old Chinese restaurant. The co-owners are Shane Milhaljevic Sr., longtime Imo’s restaurateur, his son Shane, who manages one of the Imo’s, and Zack Fagas, former front of the house manager of Sugarfire Smoke House in Valley Park. They hired a pitmaster, Jim Randall and a chef, Justin Brundeis to round out the team.
What makes this restaurant so different from other BBQ joints is a number of things beginning with the look. It took months of renovation but the end result is quite impressive. The interior might remind some of an upscale lodge. There are huge windows, oodles of gorgeous pine, gleaming Edison-style lights adding a classic, vintage feel and some other imaginative touches that separate it from the no-frills appearance of many other barbecue places.
Another way that Honey Pit Smokehouse differs is that the owners boast of possessing the only water smoker in a barbecue restaurant anywhere in Missouri. They chose a Myron Mixon’s H2O Water Smoker, designed with a patented Waterpan beneath the firebox, after attending Mixon’s barbecue school. Its moisture-rich atmosphere permits higher temperatures, cooking the meat faster without drying it out.
And last but not least, Honey Pit offers a Macro Menu section of their menu created by Emily Frisella of Fit Home & Health. This is for the health-conscious, which is a feature you’re not going to find at many BBQ joints, if any. So, besides all of the mouthwatering, finger-licking good barbecue choices like pulled pork, ribs, brisket, smoked turkey and hot sausage, there is also an array of available proteins (turkey breast, chicken breast, salmon) with choices of sides cooked with no butter or oil. Nutritional information for each of those items is listed on the menu, as is portion size.
Of course, the rubs, glazes and phenomenal smoked meats remain the star of the show but there are several other menu items you won’t want to miss. Look for four kinds of Special Sandwiches like the brisket cheese steak with garlic butter, Provel, grilled onions and peppers on a hoagie bun. Some of the unusual sides are the Provel mac ‘n cheese, creamy Krazy Korn dotted with pepper pieces, and a Hungarian salad made with cucumbers, red onion, and multi-colored pepper slices.
Diners can also look forward to Chef Justin Brundeis specials that he posts on a board each day that add to the menu’s allure, Brundeis also creates the house-baked desserts such as the smoked chocolate chip cookies and the large number of specialty shakes to round out your meal.
