It was initially referred to as “Gumbo Flats,” named because of its rich and silty soil. It covers approximately 33 square miles and is commonly referred to as Chesterfield Valley. It sets in a floodplain evidenced by the Great Flood of 1993. The county seat to St. Louis County in Clayton, Missouri.
The city was incorporated in 1988.
