7th Annual Freeze-Que Set at Hwy 61 Roadhouse

BBQ Competition to Benefit Carney’s Kids

ST LOUIS, MO/January 5, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) – It might seem a little early in the year to get excited about barbecue season.  With frost on the grass and the Christmas lights still twinkling in some St. Louis homes, the best BBQ teams in town are getting their smokers ready for the first competition of the year.  The 7th Annual Freeze-Que at Hwy 61 Roadhouse & Kitchen, 34 South Old Orchard Avenue in Webster Groves kicks off the official St. Louis BBQ Society competition season.  Forty teams competed in last year’s 6th annual event, with Team Meat Candy taking top honors.

The annual event is sanctioned and judged by the St. Louis BBQ Society, and participating teams will rack up points for the SLBS annual crown.  Hwy 61 Roadhouse owner Bill Kunz says about 50 teams are expected to compete in the elements at this year’s Freeze-Que.  There will be four meat categories, including chicken and ribs.  Besides bragging rights to the best barbecue in town, cash prizes will also be awarded to the top 5 competitors.  The Grand Champions will receive $750.  The Reserve Grand Champs will get $500, and the People’s Choice winners will take home $350.

Fans of great barbecue are invited to the two-day event.  There will be live music both days again this year.  On Saturday, 2 Hoosiers & a Hatchet will perform from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, it’ll be Kent Ehrhardt & The Bluemoon Blues Band from noon to 4:00 p.m.  There will be some terrific raffles and you can purchase rib tip samples with each Team’s sauce and cast your vote for the People’s Choice award.

The Freeze-Que will be held rain, shine or snow on Saturday and Sunday, January 28th and 29th, in the parking lot of Hwy 61 Roadhouse and Kitchen.  Since the restaurant will be open for business through, you can stop inside to grab a drink, or warm up with a full meal before, during, or after the Freeze-Que.  The Roadhouse will be open Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to Midnight.  On Sunday, brunch is 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m, with their regular menu offered from 1:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. So you could have brunch with rib tips for dessert!

This year’s event will benefit the Carney’s Kids Foundation. The 501(c)3 organization raises awareness and provides financial support for not-for-profit children’s charities.  The organizations Carney’s Kids supports provide health care and educational assistance to children, work to improve the environments of children living outside a family home, support families in need, and provide disadvantaged children with pathways to their own potential.  All money raised goes directly to the charities.

Carney’s Kids has no paid staff, it’s all volunteers.  The charities they currently support include: Ranken Jordan Pediatric Hospital, Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments, The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery, Half the Sky Foundation (works with Chinese orphans), Litzsinger School for Children with Special Needs, and Rainbows for Kids (Camp Rainbow for kids with cancer/serious illness).

The 7th Annual Freeze-Que is sure to be some seriously good eats for a seriously good cause. Check the Hwy 61 Roadhouse & Kitchen website for more information.
