Two people were killed, and three others were injured in a shooting near downtown St. Louis.

The shooting happened in the Carr Square neighborhood near Cass Avenue and North 13th Street.

The latest violence is raising renewed concerns about public safety near downtown St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — Two people are dead, and three others were injured after a shooting near downtown St. Louis, according to authorities investigating the incident.

The shooting happened in the Carr Square neighborhood near Cass Avenue and North 13th Street, just north of downtown St. Louis.

Police said multiple people were shot during the incident. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while three additional victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Authorities have not publicly released the identities of the victims.

Investigators said at least one person was detained following the shooting, but officials have not announced possible charges. Police also have not confirmed whether additional suspects may still be involved.

Crime scene investigators remained in the area for several hours collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and attempting to determine what led to the violence.

The motive for the shooting has not yet been officially confirmed.

Shooting Adds to Public Safety Concerns

The latest deadly shooting is renewing concerns among residents, business owners, and visitors about public safety in areas surrounding downtown St. Louis.

Violent crime incidents near downtown corridors continue to raise concerns as city leaders work to attract investment, tourism, conventions, restaurants, entertainment venues, and residential development back to the urban core.

Residents in several north St. Louis neighborhoods have repeatedly voiced frustration over gun violence, reckless driving, drug activity, and repeated criminal incidents that continue affecting the quality of life.

For many citizens, shootings involving multiple victims have become far too common.

Downtown Revitalization Faces Ongoing Challenges

The incident also highlights broader challenges facing downtown St. Louis and nearby neighborhoods.

City officials and developers have spent years promoting redevelopment projects aimed at improving economic growth and increasing activity downtown. New apartments, entertainment districts, restaurants, and tourism initiatives have all been part of ongoing revitalization efforts.

However, repeated violent crime incidents continue undermining public confidence.

Business owners often say safety concerns impact customer traffic, especially during evening hours. Some residents also question whether enough progress has been made to reduce violent crime in struggling neighborhoods located close to downtown.

The Carr Square neighborhood has historically faced issues involving poverty, vacant properties, crime, and economic instability. Community leaders have long called for stronger investment, improved policing strategies, youth programs, and neighborhood redevelopment efforts.

Residents Continue Demanding Safer Streets

Many St. Louis residents continue demanding stronger action to address violent crime across the city.

Public safety concerns have increasingly become a major issue in local political discussions, especially as the city continues dealing with population decline and efforts to improve economic development.

Some residents support tougher enforcement and increased police presence in high-crime areas. Others argue the city must also address root causes, including poverty, lack of opportunity, addiction, failing infrastructure, and neighborhood deterioration.

At the same time, business owners and hospitality workers worry that repeated violent incidents damage the city’s reputation and discourage visitors from supporting downtown businesses and events.

Investigation Remains Active

Police have not yet released additional details about what led to the shooting or whether investigators believe the victims and suspects knew each other.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department or CrimeStoppers.

The investigation remains ongoing, while city leaders remain silent as if they have accepted this as the new norm.
