An Ode to Brunch and So Much More – Hendel’s Market Cafe
FLORISSANT, MO: (STLRestaurant.News) – Old Town Florissant is known for its neighborly feel and historic buildings. Nowhere is this combination better exemplified that at Hendel’s Market Cafe where you’ll find classic and creative American cuisine, offered in one of the oldest buildings in town. You’ll also find a full bar with a terrific wine list, and brunch every Sunday.
The historic building dates back to 1873. It was first used as a grocery and general store. When the Hendel family purchased it in 1915, they converted it into a specialty grocery and butcher shop. In 1994, Ed Bennett bought the building and turned it into a restaurant, keeping the Hendel’s name that had been on the building for 78 years. The restaurant was expanded in 2009 to add 700-square foot bar that offers specialty drinks, an extensive wine selection and craft beers.
Hendel’s is closed Mondays. They’re open Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It’s on Sundays that brunch is served. And Hendel’s does brunch the right way, with something for everyone.
Let’s face it; one of the beauties of the meal we call brunch is that it satisfies a wide range of tastes and cravings. Hendel’s delivers with a thoughtful menu of expertly created dishes. The omelet menu has classics like the Lorraine (spinach, bacon and Swiss cheese) and the Traditional (with ham or sausage and cheese). There are also some unexpected combinations like the Mediterranean (spinach, onion, red pepper, and feta). But brunch and Hendel’s doesn’t end with omelets. Among their specialties are French toast (with pecans and raisins), biscuits smothered in their house-made gravy, and eggs Benedict, which have an extra layer—crab cakes—to add extra deliciousness. There’s also the breakfast burger, with its fried egg topping, or the egg and sausage stuffed breakfast taco, complete with salsa and sour cream. If you’re craving something more savory, try the Jameson burger. It’s certified Angus beef with a whiskey glaze, bleu cheese crumbles, and crispy onions. Or try their signature Portobello sandwich—grilled Portobello mushrooms and roasted vegetables with a balsamic glaze and mozzarella on herbed focaccia.
It’s almost worth having brunch at Hendel’s for the drinks menu alone. They offer four different kinds of Mimosa, including one made with beer. There are also four variations on the Bloody Mary, along with a nice selection of brunch-friendly drinks. Ever had a Breakfast Shot? It’s maple whiskey, butterscotch, orange juice and bacon. Or maybe the Kicked Up Coffee is more your style. It’s a velvety combination of Baileys, Kahlúa, coffee, and cream served over ice. They have the usual breakfast drinks as well, hot and iced coffee (including Irish coffee), six kinds of juice, and a nice selection of food-friendly beers.
As if brunch wasn’t enough, Hendel’s also does lunch and dinner! On Friday and Saturday evenings, they have live performances by local musicians. There’s never a cover for the generally acoustic, eclectic performances. This week, it’s Matt and Ryan, an acoustic guitar duo on Friday, and Brad Ellebracht’s jazz piano on Saturday. Reservations can be made by phone for dinner or Sunday brunch.
To celebrate Hendel’s 22 years in business, they’re having a special birthday party the week of November 22-27 (except Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, when they’re closed). Everyone who dines at Hendel’s that week gets a free slice of birthday cake! They’re also holding daily raffles for great prizes like Blues tickets, gift cards, wine. They’ll end the week by unveiling their Christmas holiday decor as part of the Historic Florissant House Tour at 2:00 p.m. November 27. It’s classic Hendel’s, a mix of historic charm, friendly fun and absolute deliciousness.
