DO?UBAYAZIT, Turkey – October 3, 2026 (STL.News) A massive boat-shaped formation in eastern Turkey is undergoing one of the most extensive scientific investigations in its history, renewing a question that has fascinated believers, explorers and scientists for decades: Could the Durup?nar formation have anything to do with the biblical story of Noah’s Ark?
The question has gained new attention following a 2026 research project led by Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University’s Department of Archaeology. Researchers have mapped the formation, conducted subsurface radar surveys, collected hundreds of physical samples, and begun laboratory testing intended to determine what actually lies beneath the unusual formation.
Some preliminary findings are intriguing.
The university has reported differences in carbon concentrations between samples collected inside and outside the formation. Researchers have conducted radar investigations looking for anomalies, voids, and corridor-like structures. Hundreds of samples have now been sent to laboratories for carbon-isotope analysis and age determination.
And a scientist associated with the project has gone considerably further, claiming new radar images reveal an organized, human-made structure beneath the formation.
But a critical distinction remains between what has been confirmed, what researchers are investigating, and what some project members believe the evidence means.
No ancient ship has been scientifically authenticated at Durup?nar.
No verified wooden hull has been recovered.
No constructed deck, room, or corridor has been physically excavated and confirmed.
No peer-reviewed scientific paper from the 2026 investigation has established that Durup?nar is human-made.
And nothing currently establishes that the formation is Noah’s Ark.
Those qualifications matter because an earlier published geological investigation concluded that Durup?nar is a natural geological structure and offered natural explanations for several objects once promoted as evidence of the Ark.
What makes the latest investigation newsworthy is that researchers are now collecting new physical and geophysical evidence that can test those competing explanations.
The Bible provides a surprisingly detailed description against which some of those findings can also be compared.
What does the Bible say Noah’s Ark looked like?
Genesis does not simply describe Noah boarding a generic boat.
Genesis 6:14-16 provides construction details and dimensions.
Noah is instructed to build the Ark from a wood whose precise identification remains uncertain in translation. The King James and New King James versions use the familiar term “gopher wood,” while the New International Version renders it as cypress wood, noting that the Hebrew word’s meaning is uncertain.
The Ark was to contain internal compartments or rooms and was to be coated inside and outside with pitch.
Genesis gives the dimensions as:
300 cubits long.
50 cubits wide.
30 cubits high.
The account also describes a door on the side and three internal levels — lower, middle, and upper decks.
That means the biblical account gives researchers several characteristics they could theoretically test against a proposed Ark site: dimensions, internal divisions, multiple levels, construction material, and geographic location.
But some popular claims about how closely Durup?nar matches those specifications need qualification.
Was the biblical Ark 515 feet long?
This is one of the most repeated claims surrounding Durup?nar.
The current research group frequently describes the formation as approximately 515 feet long.
Ark advocates have argued that this corresponds to the Bible’s 300-cubit measurement.
It can — but only if a particular cubit length is used.
The New International Version’s footnote to Genesis 6:15 converts the Ark’s dimensions to approximately 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high, or approximately 135 meters by 23 meters by 14 meters.
The English Standard Version and New King James Version similarly note that a cubit was approximately 18 inches.
At 18 inches per cubit:
300 cubits × 18 inches = 450 feet.
Therefore, calling a 515-foot Durup?nar formation an “exact match” for the biblical dimensions would be misleading.
To produce a 515-foot Ark, the cubit would need to measure approximately 20.6 inches.
Longer cubits did exist in the ancient world, so a 515-foot interpretation is not mathematically impossible.
But the choice of cubit cannot simply be adjusted until the biblical dimensions match the formation.
The more defensible conclusion is that Durup?nar’s reported length falls within the general scale of an enormous structure comparable to some interpretations of the biblical Ark, while an exact dimensional match has not been established.
The Bible does not say “Mount Ararat”
The location is another area where popular accounts frequently oversimplify Genesis.
Genesis 8:4 does not explicitly state that Noah’s Ark landed on the summit of the modern mountain called Mount Ararat.
The Hebrew text refers to the “mountains of Ararat.”
The New English Translation renders the passage as the Ark coming to rest on “one of the mountains of Ararat” and explains that Ararat corresponds to Urartu, historically a mountainous region north of Mesopotamia in what is now eastern Turkey.
That distinction matters.
The biblical description therefore identifies a broader mountainous region rather than supplying coordinates for one specific peak.
Durup?nar lies near Do?ubayaz?t in A?r? Province in eastern Turkey, within the wider geographic region historically associated with Ararat.
That means its location is broadly compatible with Genesis.
It does not mean Genesis predicts Durup?nar.
Nor does it establish that the formation contains the Ark.
But the common objection that Durup?nar cannot be the Ark because it isn’t sitting on the summit of modern Mount Ararat misunderstands what Genesis actually says.
Turkey authorized a major investigation in 2026
Unlike many sensational Ark expeditions promoted over the decades, the current investigation has an identifiable academic and governmental framework.
Sivas Cumhuriyet University announced that the Durup?nar Formation Geological Research Project received official authorization on May 21, 2026.
The project is led by Atila.
The university says intensive fieldwork began June 28 and concluded Sept. 11.
The university says approximately 20 scientists and specialists from five countries participated.
Researchers began by establishing detailed mapping of the site using high-resolution mapping, LiDAR, three-dimensional modeling, precision GPS measurements, and a systematic grid.
They then conducted underground radar investigations.
The university reported Sept. 28 that radar was used to investigate geological layers reaching as deep as 70 meters, or approximately 230 feet.
Importantly, the university did not announce that those scans had confirmed a ship.
It said the purpose of analyzing the extensive radar data was to determine whether anomalies, voids or corridor-like features potentially associated with human construction exist beneath the formation.
That is a very different claim.
Scientists are investigating whether such structures exist.
They have not yet demonstrated that they do.
Researchers collected 366 samples
The physical sampling program may ultimately provide more meaningful evidence than the radar imagery.
According to Sivas Cumhuriyet University, researchers collected 366 samples from locations inside and outside the boat-shaped formation.
The university reports that the samples were collected at depths ranging from approximately 1 to 15 meters.
They were delivered to laboratories at Ankara Y?ld?r?m Beyaz?t University for carbon-isotope analysis and age determination.
The stated objective is especially significant.
Researchers are looking for evidence of fossilized organic material, human-made objects or cultural fill within the formation.
Those categories could help distinguish between an unusual geological formation and an archaeological structure.
But as of Oct. 3, the university says comprehensive evaluation and reporting of the evidence is expected to continue into mid-2027.
In other words, researchers are still analyzing the most important physical evidence.
What about the reported 40% carbon difference?
This is one of the preliminary results directly attributable to Sivas Cumhuriyet University.
In an Aug. 28 announcement, the university reported that Atila said soil samples collected inside the formation contained about 40% more carbon than samples from outside it.
Atila said the observation increased the possibility that wood or another organic material could be present.
That is interesting.
But it does not establish the presence of an ancient wooden ship.
Carbon is found throughout natural environments. Differences in soil organic carbon can result from vegetation, drainage, sediment accumulation, decomposition, and other environmental processes.
The laboratory work must establish what material accounts for the difference, its origin, its age, and whether it has any archaeological significance.
Until that happens, the correct description is:
Researchers reported elevated carbon concentrations inside portions of the formation.
It would be incorrect to translate that into:
Researchers found Noah’s Ark wood.
They haven’t.
Radar claims are potentially significant — but preliminary
Perhaps the most dramatic development came from Dr. Khosrow Bakhtar, an engineer involved in the 2026 investigation whose specialized radar system was deployed at Durup?nar.
In an Oct. 1 announcement distributed by Noah’s Ark Scans, Bakhtar said his interpretation of processed radar imagery showed organized patterns beneath the formation.
The announcement describes linear and angular patterns, open passage-like areas and enclosed spaces that Bakhtar interprets as corridors, chambers and hallways.
Bakhtar went considerably further and said he does not believe the detected object is geological.
If independently verified, that would be an extraordinary finding.
But it has not been independently verified yet.
Noah’s Ark Scans issued the Oct. 1 announcement; it openly supports investigating Durup?nar as a candidate for Noah’s Ark and is helping support the research project.
The announcement is not a peer-reviewed scientific paper.
Bakhtar’s interpretation should therefore be reported as Bakhtar’s conclusion from his radar data, not as an established archaeological discovery.
That distinction is fundamental.
Do the radar claims match Genesis?
This is where the comparison becomes particularly interesting.
Genesis describes the Ark as containing rooms or compartments.
Genesis also specifies three levels — lower, middle and upper decks.
The Durup?nar research group has reported radar patterns interpreted as organized internal spaces, including possible corridors and chamber-like features.
On the surface, that sounds remarkably similar.
But scientifically, the comparison remains incomplete.
Radar detects differences in subsurface properties. It does not automatically tell researchers that an anomaly is a wooden wall, corridor, or room.
Geological fractures, cavities, sediment changes, moisture variations, and different rock layers can all create subsurface anomalies.
The crucial next step is physical correlation.
If researchers identify a radar feature they believe is a wall and then drill or eventually excavate that exact location, what do they find?
If they encounter ordinary geological material, the radar interpretation weakens.
If they encounter repeating worked timbers, manufactured materials or another unmistakably constructed feature, the situation changes dramatically.
Right now, the radar resembles what some researchers believe could be internal architecture. It has not established internal architecture.
Earlier geology presents a major challenge
Any responsible examination of Durup?nar must include the evidence against the Ark hypothesis.
In 1996, geologist Lorence Gene Collins and David Fasold published an analysis in the Journal of Geoscience Education concluding that Durup?nar was a natural geological structure.
That is particularly notable because Fasold had previously become one of the site’s prominent Ark proponents.
Their paper described the formation as involving steeply inclined sedimentary layers associated with a doubly plunging syncline.
They also investigated several objects previously presented as physical evidence for Noah’s Ark.
The results undermined those claims.
They attributed material described as an iron bracket to weathered volcanic minerals.
Supposed metal-braced walls were interpreted as natural concentrations of limonite and magnetite within sedimentary layers.
Material promoted as fossilized “gopherwood” bark was identified as metamorphosed peridotite.
The researchers also concluded that alleged anchor stones were made from local andesite rather than material transported from Mesopotamia.
Their conclusion was unequivocal: Durup?nar was a natural geological structure mistakenly identified as Noah’s Ark.
That remains an important scientific challenge to the current investigation.
But new research can test an old conclusion
Science is not determined by declaring a question permanently closed.
If better technology and new physical evidence contradict the 1996 interpretation, scientists can reconsider it.
That is precisely why the 2026 investigation matters.
Researchers now have modern LiDAR mapping.
They have three-dimensional models.
They have new radar datasets.
Most importantly, they have hundreds of physical samples collected systematically from inside and outside the formation.
Those samples can be compared.
If material from inside Durup?nar is indistinguishable from the surrounding geology, the natural-formation hypothesis becomes stronger.
If researchers instead identify materials that cannot reasonably be produced by natural geology — worked timber, manufactured components, or deliberately arranged structural material — the existing interpretation would require serious reconsideration.
That is the test now underway.
Bible versus Durup?nar: What actually matches?
The comparison can be summarized carefully.
SIZE
Genesis: 300 cubits long.
Durup?nar: Current research describes it as approximately 515 feet long.
Verdict: Similar general scale, but not an established exact match. An approximately 18-inch cubit produces a biblical length near 450 feet.
Genesis: The Ark contained rooms or compartments.
Durup?nar: Radar has produced anomalies interpreted by project researchers as possible corridors or chamber-like spaces.
Verdict: Potential resemblance, unconfirmed. No constructed rooms have been physically demonstrated.
Genesis: Lower, middle, and upper decks.
Durup?nar: Ark proponents have interpreted subsurface imaging as indicating organized features at multiple depths.
Verdict: Unconfirmed. No verified discovery of three constructed decks.
Genesis: The Ark was constructed from a type of wood whose exact Hebrew identification is uncertain.
Durup?nar: Preliminary sampling has shown elevated carbon concentrations inside portions of the formation.
Verdict: No confirmed match. Elevated carbon does not establish worked timber or a wooden ship.
Genesis: The Ark was coated inside and outside with pitch.
Durup?nar: No authenticated ancient pitch-coated hull material has been scientifically established.
Verdict: No confirmed match.
Genesis: The Ark rested among the mountains of Ararat.
Durup?nar: Located in eastern Turkey within the broader region historically associated with Ararat.
Verdict: Broad geographic compatibility.
What discovery would change everything?
The decisive evidence would not be another photograph showing that Durup?nar looks like a boat.
It would not be another radar image.
It would not even be elevated carbon.
Scientists would need physical evidence of construction.
Imagine researchers targeting one of the alleged radar “walls” and recovering a series of deliberately shaped wooden structural members.
Microscopic analysis demonstrates that they are wood.
Tool marks demonstrate human workmanship.
The components are arranged in an unmistakably engineered pattern.
Radiocarbon testing places them in an ancient period.
Additional excavation reveals repeated construction throughout the formation.
Chemical analysis identifies ancient waterproofing material.
Radar anomalies correspond precisely with physical walls, decks and compartments.
Independent laboratories reproduce the findings.
That would be extraordinary archaeological evidence for an ancient vessel.
Scientists would then face a second question:
Is the vessel Noah’s Ark?
Even that would require considerably more evidence.
Demonstrating that a giant ancient vessel existed in the Ararat region would not automatically prove its connection to the specific Flood account preserved in Genesis.
Archaeology would first establish what the object is, when it was constructed, and how it was used.
Historical and biblical interpretation would come afterward.
Has Noah’s Ark been found?
Based on the evidence available as of Oct. 3, 2026:
No.
Scientists have not identified Noah’s Ark at Durup?nar.
That does not mean the current investigation is meaningless.
It means the investigation is unfinished.
An officially authorized research project is underway.
Researchers have conducted extensive modern mapping and geophysical work.
Hundreds of physical samples have been collected.
The university has reported a preliminary difference in carbon concentrations.
A radar specialist working with the project has interpreted subsurface data as showing organized structures that he believes are not geological.
And the site lies within a broader geographical region compatible with the “mountains of Ararat” described in Genesis.
Those are legitimate facts.
But so are the limitations.
The laboratory work is incomplete.
The strongest radar interpretation has not been independently peer-reviewed.
No authenticated ancient ship timber has been announced.
No manufactured hull components have been established.
No physical corridors or decks have been excavated and demonstrated.
And published geological research has previously concluded that the boat-shaped formation is natural.
The most important evidence may still be in the laboratory
For decades, the debate surrounding Durup?nar has largely revolved around its remarkable shape.
The 2026 investigation could finally move the argument beyond appearances.
The 366 samples now undergoing analysis provide researchers with something previous generations of Ark hunters often lacked: systematically collected physical material that can be subjected to laboratory testing.
The outcome could strengthen either side.
If the samples reveal ordinary geological and organic processes consistent with the surrounding terrain, Durup?nar’s resemblance to a ship may remain exactly that — a remarkable natural resemblance.
If researchers discover unmistakable evidence of ancient human construction inside the formation, however, Durup?nar would immediately become an archaeological site of extraordinary international importance.
The Bible makes the comparison impossible to ignore.
It describes an enormous structure containing internal compartments and multiple decks that eventually rested somewhere among the mountains of Ararat.
Durup?nar is an enormous boat-shaped formation in the broader Ararat region, and researchers are investigating subsurface anomalies they believe may resemble organized internal spaces.
That is a fascinating correspondence.
It is not proof.
For now, the most accurate conclusion is also the most compelling:
Researchers have not found Noah’s Ark. They are conducting new tests at one of the world’s most famous proposed locations for it — and some preliminary observations have given them reasons to keep investigating.
The answer may ultimately come not from the formation’s unmistakable resemblance to a ship, but from what scientists find inside the hundreds of samples now being analyzed in laboratories.
Until those results are published, independently scrutinized, and compared with the geological evidence, Durup?nar remains an extraordinary possibility — not a confirmed biblical discovery.
Verification note: Sivas Cumhuriyet University documents the 2026 project’s authorization, field dates, radar program, sampling depths, 366 samples, and ongoing analysis. The university separately reported the preliminary 40% carbon difference in August. Genesis 6:14-16 provides the Ark’s dimensions, compartments, pitch coating, and three levels; Genesis 8:4 places its resting point among the mountains of Ararat. Claims that BakhtarRadar has established a human-made structure originate with Bakhtar and Noah’s Ark Scans and have not yet been independently established through peer-reviewed publication. Earlier published geological research concluded that Durup?nar is a natural formation.
