BALLWIN, MO – October 14, 2026 (STL.News) The Ballwin Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Tuesday, October 13, along Manchester Road in west St. Louis County.
According to local news reports, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle near Vlasis Drive and later died. The victim’s identity has not been publicly confirmed in the available reporting, and authorities have not established what caused the collision.
The crash prompted the temporary closure of westbound Manchester Road between New Ballwin Road and Hillsdale Drive while emergency personnel responded and investigators examined the scene.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The roadway subsequently reopened.
Fatal Crash Raises Pedestrian Safety Concerns
The fatal collision has renewed attention to pedestrian safety along Manchester Road, a major commercial corridor serving Ballwin and neighboring communities in west St. Louis County.
Manchester Road carries substantial vehicle traffic through shopping districts, residential neighborhoods, restaurants and other businesses. Pedestrians traveling along the corridor must navigate intersections, driveways, and multiple lanes of traffic.
Residents interviewed by KTVI-TV FOX 2 described difficulties pedestrians sometimes face when trying to cross the roadway.
Some residents expressed concern about pedestrians waiting in the center turn lane for an opportunity to cross the remaining lanes.
Although those concerns highlight existing safety challenges, investigators have not determined whether roadway design, traffic conditions, or pedestrian visibility contributed to Tuesday’s collision.
MoDOT Previously Identified Safety Problems
The Missouri Department of Transportation completed a road safety audit earlier in 2026 examining Manchester Road between New Ballwin Road and Holloway Road.
That section is east of Tuesday’s fatal crash, but the findings provide context for broader pedestrian safety concerns along the corridor.
According to MoDOT, the reviewed stretch experienced 658 reported traffic crashes between 2015 and 2024.
The audit documented one pedestrian fatality and two pedestrian crashes resulting in disabling injuries during that period. Another pedestrian fatality occurred in 2025, outside the original study period.
MoDOT identified the section between Coral Terrace and Steamboat Lane as having the highest pedestrian crash rate within the audited corridor.
The department also documented several infrastructure concerns, including narrow sidewalks, inconsistent lighting, closely spaced driveways, and limited visibility at certain pedestrian crossings.
These findings illustrate the challenges transportation officials face when balancing vehicle movement, business access and pedestrian safety along heavily traveled commercial roads.
However, the audit does not establish the cause of Tuesday’s fatal collision.
Manchester Road Safety Improvements Planned
MoDOT has identified several potential improvements designed to make portions of Manchester Road safer for drivers and pedestrians.
Recommendations include improved pedestrian crossing signals, additional roadway lighting, updated pavement markings and modifications to medians and crossing locations.
Transportation officials have also recommended a corridor-wide speed study in coordination with local officials and the public.
Some improvements could be implemented through routine maintenance, while larger infrastructure projects would require additional planning, funding, and construction.
MoDOT has also outlined a future resurfacing project along Manchester Road between Route 141 and Westglen Farms Drive.
That project is expected to include pedestrian safety improvements near Old Ballwin Road.
According to the department’s published project information, the department plans to award the resurfacing contract in September 2028.
The planned improvements are separate from the ongoing police investigation and should not be interpreted as evidence that a particular roadway condition caused the fatal crash.
Investigation Into Pedestrian Death Continues
The Ballwin Police Department is working to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Several important questions remain unanswered, including where the pedestrian was when the vehicle approached, the sequence of events before impact, and whether investigators can identify any contributing factors.
Available reporting does not establish whether the pedestrian was using a designated crossing or whether speed, distraction, visibility, or another factor contributed to the crash.
The reporting reviewed has not confirmed any citations or criminal charges connected to the incident.
Police have not released sufficient information to determine whether the driver violated any traffic laws.
Until investigators complete their work, conclusions about responsibility would be premature.
Pedestrian Safety Remains a Regional Concern
The fatality underscores the risks associated with pedestrian travel along major suburban commercial corridors.
Unlike residential streets, roads such as Manchester Road frequently combine higher traffic volumes, multiple travel lanes, turning vehicles, and numerous business entrances.
These conditions can challenge pedestrians, particularly where crossing opportunities are limited or traffic movements are complex.
Pedestrian safety improvements may include clearly marked crossings, adequate lighting, accessible sidewalks, appropriately timed traffic signals, and roadway designs that reduce potential conflicts between vehicles and people walking.
Drivers also play an important role by remaining alert near intersections, watching for pedestrians and following posted speed limits.
Pedestrians should use designated crossings when available and stay alert for approaching traffic.
For Ballwin residents, the latest fatality brings renewed attention to the importance of safe travel for everyone using Manchester Road.
The Ballwin Police Department’s investigation remains ongoing. Authorities may release additional details about the victim and the circumstances of the collision as they become available.
