Claims first top prize in new $10 game
ANNAPOLIS, MD (STL.News) A Western Maryland family can thank their mom’s dinner menu for placing their dad in the right place at the right time to win the first $100,000 top prize in the MONOPOLY™ X50 scratch-off. He visited Martin’s #6444 in Hagerstown to buy the main course for supper and wound up with an astonishing after-dinner treat.
“My wife sent me in to get precooked chicken for dinner,” recalled the winner, who shared his story after claiming his prize on Jan. 28 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The Hagerstown man is a scratch-off fan who buys instant tickets about once a month. He bought the chicken and then visited the store’s Lottery self-service vending machine. The 52-year-old had the rolling Mega Millions jackpot on his mind and wanted to get a ticket for the upcoming drawing.
“Really, I was going for the $421 million (Mega Millions jackpot),” he said, laughing. He put in a $20 bill, bought a $10 Mega Millions ticket and then decided to buy the first $10 scratch-off he saw in the machine. His eyes settled on the MONOPOLY™ X50 game and, recognizing it was new, he bought it and went home.
The husband, his wife and their children immediately ate dinner. Only afterward did he decide “to take two minutes” to play his $10 scratch-off. When he first revealed the prize, the Washington County man wasn’t sure how much he had won. He simply saw the number 1 and lots of zeros.
“I thought, at least I won $10 and I’ll get my money back,” he said. However, when he scanned the instant ticket with the Lottery app on his phone, the husband saw the prize was $100,000.
“He let out a line of words that our kids are not used to hearing,” said his wife. “They thought he was upset.” This is his largest prize ever, said the happy man. The couple have lots of plans for the $100,000 prize that include taking a summer family vacation, paying down debt, working on their house and maybe buying a new TV.
The lucky player isn’t the only one who wins! For selling a $100,000 top-prize winning instant ticket, Martin’s #6444 located at 18726 North Pointe Drive in Hagerstown will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
The $10 MONOPOLY™ X50 scratch-off game launched on Jan. 17, 2022, as part of the MONOPOLY™ Second-Chance Promotion from the Maryland Lottery. The following scratch-offs joined the $10 instant ticket: $1 MONOPOLY™ X5, $2 MONOPOLY™ X10 and $5 MONOPOLY™ X20. In addition, two FAST PLAY games were introduced: $3 MONOPOLY™ Game Tokens and $20 MONOPOLY™ Properties.
Players can enter any non-winning MONOPOLY™ scratch-off and winning or non-winning FAST PLAY MONOPOLY™ tickets into My Lottery Rewards for a chance to win cash prizes. Six drawings will take place, with each drawing awarding one Rolling Cash Jackpot and ten $2,500 prizes. A Rolling Cash Jackpot is a prize that starts at $2,500 at the beginning of each promotion period, and grows until the drawing date.
