(STL.News) You’ve probably heard of CBD, but you might not have considered taking it before.  Perhaps you’re unsure whether CBD is for you, or what benefits it might have.

This beginner’s guide to CBD will take you through what you need to know.

What Exactly is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol.  It’s a chemical compound from the cannabis plant.  That doesn’t mean it’ll get you high, though.  The psychoactive element in marijuana is THC – not CBD.

CDB is legal across much of the world, though it’s always a good idea to check your local laws and regulations.

Normally, CBD is added to a carrier oil – so you’ll often hear people talking about “CBD oil” – which is taken sublingually (under the tongue).  There are other ways to take CBD, though, and we’ll come onto those shortly.

The effect of CBD lasts between 2-8 hours, depending on a variety of factors, particularly the form in which you take CBD.

Five Benefits of CBD

Over the past few years, CBD has been seen to have a number of benefits:

#1: Treating Epilepsy

CBD has been effective in treating some forms of epilepsy, particularly in children and teens.  It’s been shown in a clinical trial to be effective against Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a rare, severe type of epilepsy that’s hard to treat).

#2: Reducing Chronic Pain

Some people find that CBD is effective for pain relief, particularly in the case of chronic pain.  There’s no set dosage, so you’ll want to start with a low dose for a week or so and gradually increase it if you feel it’s not having a sufficient effect.

#3: Reducing Anxiety

CBD could help if you suffer from anxiety.  There are lots of anecdotal reports of people finding that it helps to reduce their anxiety and stress levels, leaving them feeling focused but calmer.  If you struggle with anxiety or if you’re going through a stressful time, you might want to try CBD to see if it helps you.

#4: Decreasing Muscle Recovery Time

Some athletes take CBD to help reduce muscle inflammation – meaning that their recovery time between workouts can be shorter. If you’re looking to take things up a notch in the gym, then CBD could be helpful for you.

#5: Helping With Neurodegenerative Disorders

While it’s not conclusive, some researchers think that CBD can help with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and strokes.  It may be able to help manage certain symptoms of dementia – however, more research is needed.

How to Take CBD

While CBD is most commonly taken as a tincture, under the tongue, there are plenty of other ways to take it.  You could get CBD capsules, which makes it really easy to be sure you’re taking the same dose each time.

Another option is water-soluble CBD, which you can add to drinks – even your morning coffee.

You can also get CBD creams and ointments that you can apply directly to your skin.  These won’t have an effect beyond the localized area where you’re applying them.

There are some more unusual ways to take CBD, too, such as CBD gummies.

CBD isn’t suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, as not enough is known about it to be sure whether it’s safe for the unborn or newborn baby.  Plus, CBD isn’t a good idea if you have certain health conditions.  Consult a medical professional if you’re unsure whether or not CBD is suitable for you.
