Background of Missouri State Senator, Jay Wasson
Jay Wasson is a Republican U.S. State Senator representing the 20th District of Christian and Greene Counties in Missouri. Born in 1956 in Springfield, Missouri, Wasson was raised by his family in the same town his ancestors settled in 1867, Nixa, Missouri. He graduated from Nixa High School in 1974 and then went on to study at Drury College in nearby Springfield. Senator Wasson first decided to enter politics in 1997 when he ran for elected Mayor of his hometown, Nixa, a position his own mother once held. He won the election and served as Mayor of his hometown from 1997 to 2002, where he then made the jump to state politics. Wasson ran to represent the 141st District of the Missouri State House of Representatives. He was elected to the Missouri State House of Representatives in 2002 and became very popular among his constituents. In fact, he went on to win three consecutive reelection bids. After being subjected to term limits, he launched a campaign to represent the 20th Senatorial District in the Missouri State Senate. He was elected to the Senate in 2010, beating out Democratic contender Terry Traw by a 55-point margin of 43,439 votes. Following suit with his tenure in the Missouri State House of Representatives, Senator Wasson launched a reelection bid in 2014 and emerged victoriously.
Legislative History of Jay Wasson
Senator Wasson is an active member of the Missouri State Senate. He is currently a member of the Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and the Environment, the Fiscal Oversight Committee, the Committee on General Laws, the Joint Committee on Life Sciences, the Joint Committee on Corrections, and the Senate Interim Committee on Medicaid Transformation and Reform. In addition, he serves as the Chairman of the Committee on Economic Development. Senator Wasson is a strong voice in the Senate, advocating for education, senior issues, and small businesses like local family-owned farms. During his tenure in the Missouri State Senate, Senator Wasson has sponsored bills relating to the Missouri Works Program, the Missouri Works Training Program, tax financing, various industrial development projects, and higher education in publically funded institutions.
Through the sponsorship of these bills in conjunction with his active participation and committee memberships, Senator Wasson has proven himself to be an effective representative of his constituents in the Missouri State Senate.
Currently, Senator Wasson resides in his hometown of Nixa with his wife, Retha. His long family history in the town of Nixa no doubt shaped the values and ideals he now uses to frame his legislative agenda in his Senatorial work. Senator Wasson has found a way to relate to the people of Missouri ever since his 1997 Mayoral victory in Nixa. Throughout his four terms in the Missouri State House of Representatives and his two terms in the Missouri State Senate, Senator Wasson has served the people of Missouri with great passion.
When not performing his legislative duties in the Senate, Wasson is a real estate developer in Nixa. He also stands as a company officer for St. John’s Health Systems Inc.
