Two Chicago police officers were shot and wounded during a violent physical struggle following a traffic stop on East 79th Street. The incident highlights rising tensions and security deployments over the high-risk Fourth of July holiday weekend.

CHICAGO, IL – July 4, 2026 (STL.News) — Two Chicago police officers are recovering after being shot Friday evening during a traffic stop on the city’s South Side. The encounter escalated into a foot pursuit and a physical struggle before gunfire was exchanged, leaving both the officers and the suspect hospitalized.

The shooting occurred on the high-risk Fourth of July holiday weekend, a period historically associated with spikes in urban violence, prompting local officials to address both the specific incident and broader citywide public safety initiatives.

The Narrative of the Encounter

The incident began shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2026, in the 2000 block of East 79th Street, situated on the border of the South Shore and South Chicago neighborhoods.

According to a press briefing by Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent Larry Snelling, two officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle described as a custom, off-road “homemade vehicle.” During the initial investigation, the male driver abruptly fled the scene on foot.

The officers pursued the individual, quickly catching up to him, which initiated a violent physical struggle. During the altercation, the suspect pulled a handgun out of a shoulder bag and fired a single round.

One officer immediately returned fire, striking the suspect. Responding backup units arrived at the scene and provided immediate medical aid, including applying tourniquets, until emergency medical services arrived.

Casualty and Condition Updates

Three individuals were hospitalized as a result of the incident:

  • First Officer (Age 27): Was struck in his ballistic vest. The vest successfully stopped the round, preventing penetration. He was hospitalized to undergo evaluation and treatment for significant blunt force trauma and impact injuries.
  • Second Officer (Age 30): Sustained a gunshot wound to his arm. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he underwent successful surgery. Superintendent Snelling explicitly noted that investigators have not yet determined whether his injury was caused by the suspect’s initial round or by crossfire during the physical struggle.
  • The Suspect: Sustained multiple gunshot wounds from the officer’s return fire. He was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition under police custody.

Both wounded officers have four years of service with the Chicago Police Department. Officials confirmed that both are expected to make a full recovery.

Context of Chicago Crime and Holiday Security

The shooting took place as Chicago enters the historically violent Independence Day weekend. City administrators and police leadership have consistently deployed aggressive public safety strategies during this period to mitigate the potential for mass shootings and localized gang violence.

Superintendent Snelling and Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the media outside the hospital on Friday night, emphasizing the scale of the city’s seasonal security mobilization. The city has deployed thousands of additional CPD officers, extended shift hours, and coordinated with community-based violence intervention teams to maintain order over the holiday.

The data below contextualizes the operating environment for CPD during major holiday weekends:

Factor Security Measure / Context
Holiday Security Architecture Cancellation of scheduled days off for active officers, deployment of specialized tactical units to high-crime corridors.
Community Partnerships Activation of peacekeepers and street outreach workers funded via the city’s $20 million Community Violence Intervention Grant Initiative.
Historical Precedent Independence Day weekend traditionally experiences some of the highest volumes of violent crime incidents annually in the city.

“Our officers are out here working to protect the citizens of this city during a weekend where we know violence historically spikes,” Superintendent Snelling stated during the press conference. “They put their lives on the line, and this is a stark reminder of the dangers they face.”

Ongoing Investigations

As mandated by departmental protocol for all officer-involved shootings, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has launched an independent investigation into the use of force.

CPD investigators noted that formal interviews with the injured officers will be conducted once their medical treatments are complete. Forensic units recovered the suspect’s firearm at the scene of the struggle near 79th Street and South Chappel Avenue. No further identities have been released pending formal charges.
