FERGUSON, MO – August 3, 2026 (STL.News) Three men have been charged in connection with the fatal June 30 shooting that claimed the life of Shakeela Martin, a 35-year-old mother of five who was struck by gunfire while buying slushies for two of her children at a Ferguson gas station. The charges mark a significant step in an investigation that has drawn widespread attention across the St. Louis region because Martin was an innocent bystander with no apparent involvement in the confrontation that preceded the shooting.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Marcus Evans, 21, Jontez Young, 19, and Kyren Farmer, 21, in connection with the shooting outside the BP gas station at South Florissant Road and Woodstock Road. Authorities announced the charges following a weeks-long investigation led by the Ferguson Police Department with assistance from regional law enforcement partners.

According to charging information released by authorities, each defendant is charged with:

  • One count of second-degree murder
  • One count of first-degree assault
  • Three counts of armed criminal action
  • One count of unlawful use of a weapon for allegedly shooting at a motor vehicle.

The charges are allegations, and all three defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Mother Was Running an Everyday Errand

Police say Martin stopped at the BP station shortly before midnight with her 9-year-old and 6-year-old children to buy slushies before heading home. According to investigators, an altercation began inside the convenience store and continued into the parking lot, where multiple rounds of gunfire were fired.

Martin was struck while walking back to her vehicle with her children. She died at the scene despite emergency medical efforts. Her children were not physically injured but witnessed the shooting, a tragedy that deeply affected both their family and the Ferguson community.

Another adult male was also shot during the incident. He survived after being transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities have released few additional details regarding his condition as the criminal case proceeds.

Investigation Led to Charges

The charges follow an investigation that lasted more than a month.

According to the publicly available probable cause statements, investigators relied on surveillance video, cellphone location data, vehicle information, and other evidence described in the charging documents before presenting the case to prosecutors. The probable cause statements also describe statements investigators allege one of the defendants made during the investigation.

Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle has said the investigation remains active and that detectives will continue pursuing all leads. Authorities have indicated additional arrests or charges remain possible if further evidence is developed.

Criminal Charges Move the Case Forward

Each defendant is charged with second-degree murder under Missouri law, along with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. Prosecutors will be required to prove every element of each offense beyond a reasonable doubt during the court proceedings.

Defense attorneys will have the opportunity to challenge the evidence presented by prosecutors, and the court will ultimately determine whether the evidence supports convictions on any of the charges.

No trial date has been announced.

Community Continues to Mourn

Martin’s death quickly became one of the most heartbreaking homicide cases in the St. Louis area this year because she was simply completing an ordinary family errand.

Friends, neighbors, and community members have remembered Martin as a devoted mother whose primary focus was raising her five children. Reports following the shooting indicated that her family had been preparing to move into a new home the following day, making the tragedy even more devastating for those who knew her.

The case has also highlighted the emotional trauma experienced by children who witness violent crime. Although Martin’s two children escaped physical injury, police have acknowledged the lasting emotional impact such an event can have on young witnesses.

Violence in Public Places Remains a Concern

The Ferguson shooting renewed public discussion about violence occurring in commercial areas where innocent people can unexpectedly become victims.

Gas stations and convenience stores often experience heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic, making shootings at those locations especially dangerous. Local law enforcement agencies have increasingly relied on surveillance systems, digital evidence, and technology to investigate violent crimes occurring in public places.

Community leaders throughout north St. Louis County have also continued to emphasize the importance of violence prevention programs, neighborhood engagement, and cooperation between residents and law enforcement to reduce violent crime before it escalates.

Court Process Now Begins

With charges now filed, the case moves into Missouri’s criminal justice system.

Prosecutors will present evidence supporting the charges during future court proceedings, while defense attorneys will have the opportunity to contest that evidence. As in every criminal case, the burden remains on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Additional information may become public as court hearings and filings continue over the coming months.

Family Awaits Justice

For Martin’s family, the filing of charges represents an important milestone, but not the conclusion of the case.

The judicial process will now determine whether prosecutors can establish that the defendants are legally responsible for the shooting that claimed Martin’s life and seriously injured another victim.

Regardless of the outcome, the case serves as another painful reminder of how quickly gun violence can change lives. Ferguson police continue to encourage anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators or CrimeStoppers as the investigation remains active.
