LONDON, June 12 (STL.News) – The UK government has officially appointed Angela Eagle as the new UK security minister. This transition was confirmed by government officials on Friday, following a broader cabinet reshuffle initiated after the resignation of Defence Secretary John Healey.

Healey stepped down from his position due to disagreements surrounding the Defence Investment Plan. In response to the vacancy, Prime Minister Keir Starmer promoted Dan Jarvis, who previously held the security role, to become the new Defence Secretary. Eagle moved into the security post from her former position as the Minister of State for Food Security and Rural Affairs.

Cabinet Reshuffle

The ministerial changes reflect a rapid realignment within the current administration. The position of security minister functions as a dual role, positioned within both the Home Office and the Cabinet Office. Eagle brings extensive experience to the brief, having served as the Minister for Border Security and Asylum from July 2024 to September 2025. Her career in government spans service under multiple prime ministers, including Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, covering portfolios in the Treasury, Home Office, and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Political Career

First elected as the Labour MP for Wallasey in 1992, Eagle has maintained a continuous parliamentary tenure for 34 years. She has established several political milestones, including becoming the first openly lesbian member of the UK Parliament after coming out in 1997. Additionally, alongside her twin sister, Maria Eagle, she holds the distinction of being part of the first set of twins to serve simultaneously in the House of Commons.

Beyond her legislative work, Eagle has held various leadership roles and garnered national attention for her policy contributions. Reflecting on her transition, a government spokesperson noted the importance of her experience during this adjustment period. Dame Angela Eagle is a highly experienced Labour politician who has broken several historic political barriers.

Personal History and Milestones

Eagle was born in Yorkshire in 1961 and attended Oxford University, where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Her early life was marked by success in chess, where she won the British Girls’ Under-18 Chess Championship at age 15. Throughout her career, she has been involved in several notable public moments, ranging from advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights to high-profile exchanges in the House of Commons. In 2008, she became the first female MP to enter into a civil partnership, and she has remained a prominent figure within the Labour Party for over three decades.
