(STL.News) Used containers can be a smart and economical solution for your storage needs, on-site office, or conversion project. However, not every container is in excellent condition, and minor issues can lead to major repairs. Knowing what to look for before buying can save you headaches down the road.

1. Severe Rust and Corrosion

Excessive rust is a sign that corrosion is present. If there are severe or deep pitting present and flakes of metal are showing on the walls or roof, then the structure is weak.

Superficial rust is not a problem. However, if corrosion penetrates the frame of the used container, it compromises its integrity. Be sure to watch the roof, door frames, and bottom rails, as they tend to be damaged first.

For the Shipping Containers Christchurch branch, you must see the container first-hand instead of relying on photos. Understand that a complete check will save you a lot of time and money in the future.

2. Damaged Corner Castings

Corner castings firmly secure the corners of the container. Due to the possibility of being lifted, stacked, and moved, any cracks or damage to a container can pose safety risks.

If the container’s castings show signs of bending, cracks, or severe rust, it probably won’t be able to support weight properly. Unless you plan on spending money on having it repaired, units with corner damage are best left alone.

3. Warped or Uneven Doors

The doors of containers should open and close easily and with little force. If they’re hard to line up or the locking bars don’t sit straight, it could mean that the frame is off. Such issues can weaken the weatherproofing and stability over time, especially if you’re storing or converting it.

4. Weak or Rotten Flooring

Container floors are made from marine-grade plywood and are cross-supported with steel. If the flooring feels soft, spongy, and uneven, there is likely water damage or decay.

Take note that if the floors are damaged, you may be able to replace them. On the other hand, if the damage is structural and hidden, you may have to do a lot more work.

5. Bent Side Panels or Roof Panels

Big dents, waves, or buckles can weaken the structure and make stacking unsafe. Small dents for looks are usually fine, but big changes in shape could make the container less waterproof. To find small cracks in the wall, you should step back and look along its length.

6. Signs of Water Leaks

One undesirable thing about used containers is that they can leak water. Look for any rust spots, stains, or small holes in the seal that let light through.

Additionally, pay close attention to the roof. Water that gets trapped there can cause corrosion that you might not see right away. The door seals, hinges, and rubber gaskets should all be checked to make sure they still keep water out.

7. Structural Frame Distortion

The major framework is for the top rails, bottom rails, and cross members. If the frame is twisting, sagging, or showing uneven gaps between panels, it might be warped.

Improper handling or impact can cause damage to the frame. The container may appear fine, but microfractures can compromise its safety and operability in the long term.

Protect Your Investment Before You Buy

You’re not just buying a metal box when you buy a used container. If you look for these seven structural warning signs, you’ll feel more sure about your choices. Take your time, look closely, and ask questions. A good container will last you for years.
