Two Materials That Only Look Similar

Drywall is compressed gypsum with a paper facing, soft, uniform, and forgiving to drive into. Cement board is a cement slurry reinforced with fiberglass mesh, built specifically to be hard, moisture-resistant, and dimensionally stable under tile and stone. That hardness is the entire point of the material, and it’s also exactly what a standard drywall screw isn’t built to handle. Drywall screws have a thin shaft and a bugle-shaped head optimized for driving into soft gypsum quickly; against cement board’s density, that same thin shaft is prone to snapping or stripping out before it seats properly.

What Cement Board Screws Actually Do Differently

Cement board screws are cut with a sharp point and a deep-recessed drive head specifically to reduce cam-out while driving into a much harder substrate, and many have dual threads or aggressive serrations designed to bite into both the cement board and the framing behind it in a single motion. The head design matters too: a deep Torx drive recess seats the driver bit more securely under the higher torque cement board requires, whereas a standard drywall screw’s shallower Phillips drive is more likely to strip before the screw is fully seated.

The Corrosion Problem Nobody Mentions

Beyond the mechanical mismatch, there’s a chemical one. Cement board carries measurable alkalinity from the cement itself, and that alkaline environment accelerates corrosion in fasteners that aren’t specifically coated to resist it. Cement board screws carry a coating engineered for that exposure; standard drywall screws generally don’t and will corrode over time even in an application that never sees direct outside moisture, purely from sustained contact with the board material itself. In a wet area like a shower surround, that corrosion problem compounds with actual water exposure, which is exactly the application cement board is most often used for in the first place.

Wood Framing vs. Steel Framing

Screw selection for cement board also depends on what’s behind it. For wood framing, a #8 x 1-1/4 inch screw is the standard specification for most tile backer applications, sized to fully penetrate the board and get solid purchase into the stud without punching through excessively. Steel-framed installations call for a self-drilling or self-tapping tip rated for the stud gauge being used, since a wood-rated screw without the right point geometry will struggle to start cleanly on steel and may back out or fail to seat flush.

Installation Details That Affect Long-Term Performance

Screw depth matters in cement board installation because of what goes over it. Screws should be driven until the head sits just below the board’s surface, consistent and flush, without over-driving to the point of cracking or crushing the board around the screw head, since cement board doesn’t compress or dimple the way gypsum does. Driving at an angle rather than perpendicular is a common source of stripped or improperly seated screws on this material specifically, since the board’s density doesn’t forgive an off-angle approach the way softer materials do. Spacing generally follows the tile setting material manufacturer’s specification, but a consistent grid pattern across studs, rather than clustering fasteners, is what keeps the board flat and prevents flex under the tile once it’s set.

Why This Is Worth Getting Right the First Time

A tile installation over improperly fastened cement board doesn’t usually fail immediately. It fails months or years later, as corroded or under-torqued screws lose their grip and the board starts to flex slightly under foot traffic or thermal movement, which cracks grout lines and eventually loosens tile. Because the fasteners are hidden under the finished surface, the fix at that point means demolition rather than a simple repair. Using the correct cement board screw, matched to wood or steel framing and driven to the correct depth, is a small upfront decision that avoids a disproportionately expensive one later.
