LONDON, June 14 (STL.News) – British Armed Forces have intercepted an oil tanker linked to the Russian shadow fleet in the English Channel. This marks the first operation of its kind conducted independently by the United Kingdom.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the action following the mission in the early hours of June 14, 2026. Commandos and the National Crime Agency boarded the vessel to enforce international sanctions.
“In the early hours of this morning, I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel,” Starmer said in a post on X.
The vessel involved is the Cameroon-flagged tanker Smyrtos. The UK had previously sanctioned this ship for its role in transporting Russian oil, a practice used to circumvent international restrictions.
Ship tracking data indicates the tanker departed from the Russian port of Luga Bay on June 5. It was traveling toward Port Said in Egypt before being intercepted by British forces.
The operation involved significant military coordination. Royal Marine Commandos were supported by naval assets including HMS Sutherland and HMS Ledbury. An RAF P-8 maritime patrol aircraft and various helicopters also provided assistance during the boarding.
The mission was carried out under Article 110 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which provides a right of visit when there is suspicion regarding a vessel’s status. The Smyrtos is currently being escorted to an anchorage off the South Coast of England.
The intervention occurred amid domestic political developments in the UK. This follows the recent appointment of Dan Jarvis as Defense Secretary after the resignation of John Healey.
The interception has drawn varied international responses. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commended the move, urging further European action. Conversely, a Kremlin envoy claimed the operation was intended as a political distraction.
The shadow fleet remains a critical component of Russia’s economy. By moving oil through aging, under-insured vessels, the network attempts to avoid the sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine. British authorities stated this action is intended to degrade the resources supporting the conflict.
