Two men were critically injured in an overnight shooting in north St. Louis early Tuesday morning. The incident comes as city and state officials remain locked in a dispute over the future of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department following Missouri’s 2025 decision to return the department to state control.

ST. LOUIS, MO/June 9, 2026 (STL.News) — Two men were left fighting for their lives after an overnight shooting in north St. Louis, adding another violent incident to a city that continues to grapple with public safety concerns and a politically charged battle over control of its police department.

According to preliminary information released by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday to the 5900 block of Sherry Avenue. Investigators said an altercation inside a residence escalated into gunfire, leaving two men critically injured.

Police reported that one of the men allegedly forced his way into the home before the confrontation occurred. Both victims suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. A woman who was inside the residence was not injured.

As of Tuesday morning, investigators had not announced any arrests, and homicide detectives were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Another Violent Incident Draws Attention to Public Safety

While details surrounding this particular shooting remain under investigation, the incident has once again focused attention on crime and violence in St. Louis.

Residents across many neighborhoods have repeatedly expressed concerns about shootings, carjackings, robberies, and other violent offenses that have affected communities throughout the city during the past decade.

Supporters of tougher crime policies argue that persistent violence has contributed to population loss, declining business investment in some neighborhoods, and growing frustration among residents who want safer streets.

At the same time, city officials have pointed to recent declines in several crime categories and improvements in homicide statistics compared with previous years. Police leaders have also highlighted successful enforcement efforts and partnerships with federal agencies targeting repeat violent offenders.

The debate has become increasingly political, with state leaders and city leaders often disagreeing on both the causes of crime and the best solutions.

Missouri Returns St. Louis Police to State Control

One of the most significant developments in the ongoing public safety debate occurred in 2025, when Missouri lawmakers approved legislation that returned the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to state oversight.

Governor Mike Kehoe signed legislation establishing a state-appointed Board of Police Commissioners to oversee the department. Under the law, the governor appoints most board members, while the mayor serves as a member. The transition marked the end of local control that city voters had regained following a statewide vote in 2012.

Supporters of the legislation argued that stronger oversight, increased police funding requirements, and a more independent governance structure would improve public safety and help address long-standing crime concerns in the city.

Many Republican lawmakers and law enforcement advocates contended that the city’s public safety challenges warranted a different approach and that the state should play a larger role in policing policy.

Critics Call State Takeover an Overreach

Opponents of the state takeover have strongly disagreed with that assessment.

Former city leaders, members of the Board of Aldermen, and civil rights advocates argued that local voters had already decided the issue when they approved local control more than a decade ago.

Critics have characterized the state’s action as an unnecessary political intervention and questioned whether changing the department’s governing structure will meaningfully impact crime rates.

The dispute has since moved into the courts.

In April 2026, the City of St. Louis filed a lawsuit challenging the state takeover law, arguing that Missouri’s requirements create what city officials describe as an unfunded mandate. City leaders contend that the law forces taxpayers to fund a police department they no longer directly control, potentially diverting money from other essential city services.

The lawsuit remains ongoing.

The Funding Debate

At the center of the controversy is money.

State law requires St. Louis to dedicate a larger portion of its budget to policing. Supporters say additional resources are necessary to recruit officers, improve retention, and strengthen public safety operations.

Police officials have noted that staffing shortages have affected the department for years and that competitive compensation is needed to attract and retain qualified officers.

City officials, however, argue that increasing police expenditures beyond what the city can afford could force reductions in other departments and services that residents rely on.

The disagreement illustrates a broader question facing many American cities: how much funding should be directed toward law enforcement versus social programs, infrastructure, housing, and other government services.

Residents Want Results

For many residents, the political arguments matter less than outcomes.

Families living in neighborhoods affected by gun violence often measure success not by which level of government controls the police department but by whether shootings decrease and whether offenders are removed from the streets.

Business owners similarly want safer commercial corridors, improved quality of life, and confidence that customers can visit local establishments without fear of crime.

The shooting on Sherry Avenue serves as another reminder that public safety remains one of the most important issues facing the city.

Whether state control ultimately produces measurable improvements remains a subject of intense debate. What is certain is that residents will be watching closely as the new governance structure continues to take shape and as city and state officials battle over the department’s future.

Investigation Continues

Meanwhile, detectives continue investigating Tuesday morning’s shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department or CrimeStoppers.

As investigators work to determine exactly what happened inside the residence on Sherry Avenue, the shooting stands as the latest example of the violence that continues to challenge St. Louis and fuel an ongoing conversation about policing, public safety, accountability, and the future direction of the city.
