Cubano-Creole-Caribe Fusion at Boogaloo

Maplewood Mainstay Is Still One-of-a-Kind Fun – Boogaloo

Maplewood, MO/December 30, 2016 (STLRestaurant.News) – Some restaurants are special.  They have a style, a feel, and a flavor all their own. Boogaloo at 73344 Manchester Road in Maplewood is one of those special places.  It’s a little bit Caribbean, a little bit Cuban, a little bit Creole, and a whole lot of fun!  But then, that’s the nature of a fusion restaurant isn’t it?  Boogaloo’s special blend of cuisines and cultures has been recognized as exceptional from the start.  The restaurant and bar has a fun, eclectic decor replete with bold colors, murals, and alligator skin wallpaper!

Boogaloo owner and chef, Dan Powers has been there since the place opened in 2005.  As the son of one of the original investors, he helped Chef Mike Johnson get the restaurant off the ground.  Johnson moved on about four years ago, and now Power’s is the force behind Boogaloo’s one-of-a-kind dining experience.

The menu is as unique as the venue.  It features traditionally inspired Cuban, Caribbean and Creole cuisine, served as tapas and as entrees.  Whether you’re craving crawfish, conch fritters, jerk chicken tacos, or fried plantains with red pepper romesco,  Boogaloo’s got you covered.  One of the stars of their appetizer menu is the Mussels Steamed in White Sangria (with coconut milk, lime and cilantro).  Customers just rave about them and the empanadas.  They do two kinds daily: Spinach and Artichoke with caramelized onion-yogurt sauce and Crab Empanadas with black bean puree and volcano sauce.

Boogaloo also offers some unique fusions creations that are as delicious as they are adventurous.  How about Cuban Paella?  Theirs is made with shrimp, mussels, clams, market fish, Andouille, Valencia rice with saffron and coconut milk.  Or how about a Picadillo?  The Cuban “sloppy joes” are a fragrant stew of ground beef and tomatoes, with raisins and olives adding a sweet-salty kick.  Or try their Caesar Cuban salad.  It’s made with hearts of romaine, like a regular Caesar salad, but they use manchego and anchovy instead of parmesan, and they add chipotle to the dressing!

With food like that, it’s no wonder they found their way into our customer review-based Top 10 Fusion Restaurants in St. Louis (#8) and our Top 10 Cajun & Creole Restaurants in St. Louis (#5).  The fusion doesn’t stop on the restaurant side.

Boogaloo also has an award winning cocktail bar that specializes in mixing up signature drinks.  They offer a great selection of wine and bottled beer, as well as a dozen drafts.  And if their fabulous Mojitos, Caipirinhas, and Sangria aren’t enough to bring you to the bar, their swings certainly are!  Boogaloo is the only establishment in the St. Louis area where every seat at the bar is a swing.  Really.  They’re hanging from the ceiling all in a row.  Just like the playground when you were a kid, you can’t reserve them.  The swings are first-come, first-served. If you’re lucky enough to snag one, it’s a fun way to spend an evening!

Boogaloo offers Happy Hour specials from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, and late night Happy Hour from 10:00 p.m. to close Monday – Thursday!  The bar is open from 11:00 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday – Friday, and noon to 1:00 a.m. Saturdays.

Boogaloo is situated perfectly on Maplewood’s main street, making them a convenient stop for lunch or dinner, and a great destination for a night out with friends.  Did we mention they have swings at the bar?

Right now, they’re offering a New Year’s Eve Dinner special that includes a four-course dinner and champagne toast at midnight ($40).  Reservations can be made online or by phone.  But tables (and swings) are filling up fast!  If you miss them New Year’s Eve, then make plans to join them for Mardi Gras in February!
