CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, IL – August 22, 2026 (STL.News) Some families in Cahokia Heights say their children have been unable to attend school during the first week of classes, raising questions about registration and how quickly Cahokia Unit School District 187 can resolve enrollment problems.
FOX 2 reported Friday that students were being turned away from schools in Cahokia Heights after the school year began Monday. According to the station’s report, parents said they were still waiting to learn when their children could attend classes.
The situation comes despite the district having urged returning families months ago to complete enrollment before the new academic year. Cahokia Unit School District 187 posted a notice on May 18 announcing a May 28 returning-registration deadline and directing families to complete the process through its Skyward enrollment system.
The district also maintains separate registration procedures for new and returning students. Its current registration page directs new families with students in kindergarten through 12th grade to its new-student registration system, while returning families use a separate registration link. Families with questions about returning students can email the district’s registration account.
Cahokia Heights – School Registration Requires Residency Documents
One potential complication for families is the district’s residency verification process.
District 187’s published requirements state that families must provide two proofs of residency. Acceptable documents include an occupancy permit listing the parent or legal guardian and child, mortgage documents, a lease agreement with the previous month’s rental receipt, a current utility bill, certain tax or benefit documents, vehicle registration, or a current bank statement.
The district specifically states that medical cards, driver’s licenses, and what it describes as “junk” mail are not accepted as residency documentation.
For new students, the district also requires an original birth certificate or another qualifying certificate. Its published guidance says photocopies are not accepted.
Health requirements can create another issue as the school year begins. District guidance says physical, vision, and dental examinations are not required to complete registration itself, but families must provide applicable documentation to the school before the first day. Requirements vary by grade level and include physical examinations and immunization records for certain students.
Families Face Lost Classroom Time
Parents’ immediate concern is how much instructional time children could lose while registration issues remain unresolved.
The FOX 2 report said school began Monday, yet parents interviewed by the station said the district had not told them when their children would be able to start attending.
That distinction is important. Available information confirms reports that students have been turned away and that families are seeking answers, but it does not establish that every affected student was rejected for the same reason.
STL.News has not independently confirmed how many students are affected.
District 187’s website still provides registration access for both new and returning students, rather than indicating that enrollment has closed.
Parents experiencing problems may want to document when they submitted registration materials, what documents they provided, and any communication they received from their child’s school or the district.
District 187 Opens School Year During Major Changes
The enrollment controversy comes during a significant period for Cahokia Unit School District 187.
The district has been working on a major new high school project at 815 Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia Heights. District documents describe the development as the “New High School Project.”
The project represents a substantial investment. District financial records show that $72.58 million in 2024 general obligation lease certificates were issued, and the proceeds were deposited into the Capital Projects Fund for construction of the new high school.
District records also show Cahokia High School among the schools included in planning for the 2026-27 academic year. In April, the Board of Education agenda included approval of fiscal year 2027 schoolwide plans and the district’s consolidated plan.
What Parents Can Do
Families still trying to complete enrollment can use the registration resources provided by Cahokia Unit School District 187.
The district’s central office is at 1700 Jerome Lane in Cahokia Heights, and its main telephone number is 618-332-3700. Its website lists central office hours as 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Parents of returning students can also use the contact information listed on the district’s registration page for questions about their enrollment status.
For families whose children have already missed several days, the key question is how quickly outstanding registration or residency issues can be cleared so students can enter classrooms.
As the second week of school approaches, families will also want more clarity on how many students still can’t attend and what steps the district is taking to resolve individual cases.
