An Unpretentious Sport for St. Louis Foodies – Three Flags Tavern

ST. LOUIS, MO: (STLRestaurant.News) – You’ve no doubt heard of restaurants and taverns with “Happy Hours,” but have you heard of “Oyster Hours?”  You have if you’ve been among the lucky St. Louis diners who’ve discovered Three Flags Tavern, 4940 Southwest Avenue in St. Louis (on the Hill).  When Chef John O’Brien and wife Cathy opened TFT in 2014, they were aiming for a neighborhood place with good food and service.  What they got is a bright spot in St. Louis’ culinary scene, with impeccably executed but unfussy food served well, in a friendly, inviting tavern.

The restaurant gets its name from the history of St. Louis.  On March 9-10, 1804, the flags of Spain, France and the United States each hung over the city during the ceremonial transfer of the Louisiana Territory.  The event is known as Three Flags Day.  The O’Briens were inspired by the culinary intersection of the three great nations and say it was relevant to the direction their menu was taking, so they went with it, and Three Flags Tavern was born.

And “tavern” really is the right term for this neighborhood restaurant.  There’s a bar, and several tables, but it feels more like an inviting and cozy stopover for hungry travelers than a simple bar and grill.  The professional, friendly hospitality offered makes the place feel like your favorite neighborhood pub.  But the meticulous attention to detail and exceptional menu take it to the next level.  No wonder they were among Opentable’s 2016 top 10 restaurants fit for foodies in the St. Louis region.

Dinner at TFT can be as simple and familiar as fried chicken, pomme puree (elevated mashed potatoes), greens and biscuit.  Or a little more adventurous like their Serrano wrapped pork loin chop, served with gnocchi, pickled rosemary pears, and goat cheese crema.  Both are simply delicious.  But in the unpretentious style that is Three Flags Tavern, you can also get burger (made with ground brisket) and fresh fries or fresh lobster rolls (Connecticut or Maine style), and of course, oysters.  They’re a regular menu item, but during Oyster Hours, Monday-Friday, 3-6 pm the Oysters are $1.50 each!  There are also beer, wine and drink specials.

Three Flags Tavern offers dinner seven-days a week, and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.  Bunch hint: Try the buttermilk biscuits (scones) with genuine Devonshire Cream and fruit preserves!

You can dine at the bar, in the cozy dining room, or, while the weather holds, on their lovely tree-shaded patio.  Reservations are not required, but they are recommended.  They can be made on the restaurant’s website or by phone.
