Bringing “The Hill” to Glendale – Vitale’s Deli

ST. LOUIS, MO: (STLRestaurant.News) – Vitale’s Deli – Loving food is all about anticipating the next tasty treat.  So as soon as Labor Day was over, my mind had already turned to that fall classic, pumpkin spice.  Now that Halloween has come and gone, I’m craving turkey—a turkey sandwich! But I’m not about to roast a bird until Thanksgiving.  But where can I get a great one?  According to customer reviews, Vitale’s Deli, one of the newest sandwich shops in town is also one of the best, especially when it comes to turkey.

Mike Vitale grew up on the Hill, so it should be no surprise that when he and his wife decided to open a restaurant in Glendale, they chose a classic Italian deli.  Mike learned the food business working in his family’s business, Vitale Bakery, after all.  He spent two decades alongside his parents and his brothers, baking fresh bread for their storefront and local restaurant customers.  So of course, he uses only that fresh, family crafted, Vitale bread in his sandwich shop.

This little bit of “the Hill” in Glendale offers nine classic sandwiches, on fresh white or wheat rolls.  Mike uses only Boar’s Head deli meats and cheeses in his sandwiches.  And all of the sandwiches are served with a small side of potato salad or macaroni salad (think pasta salad).  After just over a year in business, customer reviews are giving Vitale’s Deli five-stars.

There are two versions of the turkey sandwich.  First, there’s The Annie.  It starts with Boar’s Head Cracked Pepper Mill Turkey Breast—delicately smoked turkey seasoned with cracked black peppercorns and paprika.  Then Mike adds mozzarella cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles and Cajun-style mayonnaise.  That’s the secret sauce here.  The zesty tang of the mayonnaise perfectly complements the peppery turkey.  The Annie is an instant classic.

All of the sandwiches are named after Mike’s family members: The Annie, The Pete, The Cathy, The Gracie, etc.  All of them, except the other turkey sandwich on Vitale’s menu.  This one he named after the community that has welcomed his deli like a cool sip of water on a hot day.  This one is the Glendale Club—it’s a turkey sandwich with a salad on top!  Again, it’s built on your choice of roll, but this one stars the Boar’s Head Black Forest Turkey.  It’s hickory smoked, skinless turkey breast that’s a little lower in sodium, but still full of flavor.  The smoky, slightly sweet deli slices pair exceptionally well with the buttery Havarti cheese.  It’s topped with Vitale’s own BLT salad (bacon, lettuce & tomato).

Just because you’re there for a great a turkey sandwich, don’t skip the fresh, house-made meatballs.  They’re perfectly tender, with just the right amount of marinara. Get them on The Gracie (sandwich) with mozzarella, or The Sarah (a salad).  These will transport you to right back to Marconi & Bishoff!

Vitale’s Deli is open 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday (or until they run out of fresh bread!).
