Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo met today with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa in Lisbon. Secretary Pompeo and Prime Minister Costa reaffirmed the strength of the U.S.-Portugal relationship and discussed ways to advance the partnership. The Secretary and Prime Minister also discussed the importance of our shared commitment to NATO and how best to strengthen Transatlantic cooperation to address emerging threats. The Secretary urged Portugal, along with all NATO Allies, to continue building on the progress made so far in increasing defense spending in line with commitments made by all NATO Allies.
