Democrats believe that gun control can be a winning issue in 2020.
They point to polling data that shows Democrats were more energized by gun control than Republicans by gun rights in 2018.
That came on the heels of the Parkland school shooting and the activism by survivors to make gun control a big issue in the midterms.
Still, the issue may remain politically fraught for Democrats. Hillary Clinton embraced gun control in 2016. Donald Trump accused her of planning to repeal the Second Amendment, which she denied, and he warned she might appoint Supreme Court justices with that goal.
Republicans believe that’s part of the reason Trump narrowly won.
Democrats could also tack too far left on guns as they compete for their party’s base voters in the primary.
