MO Attorney General Josh Hawley releases Annual Vehicle Stops Report

JEFFERSON CITY, MO/June 4, 2017 (STL.News) Attorney General Josh Hawley released the 2016 Annual Vehicle Stops Report on June 1, 2017.

Residents of Missouri were concerned about racial profiling by law enforcement prompted passage  of Section 590.650. RSMo in 2000.  It is a statute requiring all peace officers to report specific information, including driver’s race for each stop made in the state.

AG Hawley is issuing new regulations that will require law enforcement officers to collect information about whether stopped individuals reside within the agency’s jurisdiction.  The change is supported by law enforcement and civil rights communities.  The purpose of this change is to provide the public more relevant inferences from the data in the future.

Enforcement agencies are required to provide the data to the Attorney General by March 1st of each year.  The Attorney General is required to prepare a report that is to be submitted to the Governor by June 1st of each year.

The Governor can withhold state funds from any enforcement agency that fails to comply with this requirement.

The report recently filed for 2016 summarizes data from 601 law enforcement agencies in the state of Missouri.  Additionally, 60 agencies reported that they made no traffic stops during 2016.  This data represents 96.9% of the 682 law enforcement agencies in Missouri.  The agencies reported 1,555,468 traffic stops, resulting in 95,944 searches and 72,390 arrest.

In order to avoid any potential perceptions relating to racism or profiling we encourage you to read the original report provided to the public by the AG.  Please visit the following link for complete details
