ST. LOUIS, MO – To reduce congestion during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, MoDOT will suspend most work on interstates and state highways starting on Friday, May 25 at noon.  Traffic will still be restricted in areas where there are permanent barriers, such as on I-44 from Grand to Shrewsbury, or on roadways that are closed to the public, such as Route P at Route 61 in St. Charles County.  Emergency roadwork will also be performed as needed.  Work on all construction projects will resume on Tuesday, May 29 at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, work continues on the Interstate 55 bridge rehab project in Jefferson County.  Starting at 12 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, crews will close one lane on southbound I-55 south of U.S. Route 61 around-the-clock for 40 days.  This is the same thing that has been happening on northbound I-55 where one lane has been closed since April 24.  That lane will reopen on Friday, May 26.

During the southbound lane closure, concrete traffic barriers will be up and the open lane of traffic will only be 11 foot wide.  As a reminder, please fill up both lanes of traffic and take turns merging just before the closure point.  The zipper merge will actually make traffic flow better and decrease merging dangers.  By using both lanes, you reduce the speed difference between the two lanes and can reduce the length of backups by up to 50-percent.

For additional work zone information and real-time roadway weather conditions, go to http://traveler.modot.org/map.  For real-time traffic, visit www.gatewayguide.com.  All work is weather permitting and may be shifted due to inclement weather.
