Missouri Lottery News: Columbia Man, Roger Birdsong, Wins $50,000 Powerball Prize

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Jan. 13, 2019 – A gathering with extended family led to a $50,000 Powerball prize for Roger Birdsong of Columbia.  It was while eating dinner at Como Smoke and Fire that the group decided each individual family should buy a ticket at the gas station next door for that night’s Powerball drawing.  With a stop at Steve-O’s, 4600 Paris Road, Birdsong purchased a $2 ticket that would soon be worth $50,000.

The ticket matched four out of five white-ball numbers, as well as the Powerball number drawn on Dec. 26.

“I didn’t believe it as the numbers were matching up,” he said, noting that he’d checked his ticket at MOLottery.com the next day.  “I had my son-in-law check, and he said, ‘That’s $50,000!’  Then my son looked it up and he said, ‘That’s $50,000!’”

Birdsong and his wife, Beverly, soon found themselves at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City to claim their prize.  “We were one number away from talking about millions,” he teased, still very happy with the outcome.  “It’s the first thing we’ve ever won!”

Powerball is a multi-state Draw Game that features nine ways to win cash prizes and a jackpot that starts at $40 million and grows until it is won.  The winning numbers drawn on Dec. 26 were 5, 25, 38, 52 and 67.  The Powerball number was 24.

All Missouri Lottery Draw Games tickets can be scanned on the Lottery’s mobile app to determine if a ticket is a winner, as well as on Check-A-Ticket machines at retail.  Current and historical winning numbers can also be found at MOLottery.com.
