Because Sometimes You Just Need a Great Taco – La Tejana Taqueria
Bridgeton, MO: (STLRestaurant.News) – La Tejana Taqueria – Crave time. It hits all of us. Sometimes you just need tacos. They don’t have to be fancy, but they do have to be great. There’s no place better in the metro area than La Tejana Taqueria at 3157 North Lindbergh Blvd (just off Whitehall Manor Drive) in Bridgeton. This unassuming little taco joint in an ordinary looking strip mall makes the most amazing tacos in town.
Owners Antonio and Brenda Garcia built La Tejana as a business in four-parts, a food symphony of sorts. Each part offers a special selection of offerings elemental to good Hispanic cuisine. And each is a great place to learn more about the food and culture south of the border. The other thing they have in common is the great hospitality that underscores the entire La Tejana enterprise.
First, there’s la Tienda. This is La Tejana’s Hispanic grocery store. It offers fresh items, milk and dairy, canned, frozen foods, dried goods (including a huge selection of dried peppers and chilies!), along with other kitchen/household items. La tienda specialize in offering the ingredients and brands used in authentic Mexican cooking. You will find products from Goya, El Milagro, and La Costeña, among others.
Next, you’ll find la Carniceria. That’s the butcher shop in the back of the grocery store (la tienda). Like the groceries they offer, the focus of la carniceria is on offering good quality meats, especially the cuts unique to Hispanic cooking. You’ll find steaks and chickens, certainly. But you’ll also find cow’s head, chorizo and other sausage blends, along with pork, goat and lamb. They’re happy to answer any questions you may have about the meat selection, and they do custom cuts. ¡Exquisito!
There is also a licoreria attached, called Garcia Liquors. Here you will find all of the beer, wine and liquor one would expect in a well stocked liquor store. But you’ll also find an ample selection of Mexican beers like Corona, Pacifico, Victoria, Dos Equis, and Modelo. And they offer a wide range of tequilas, everything from the familiar Jose Cuervo to the vintage Tequila Anejos straight from Jalisco.
But you came for tacos. As soon as you detect the tantalizing aromas at La Tejana Taqueria, you‘ll know you’re in the right place. The restaurant is cozy nook with just a few booths and tables. It’s as understated as the food is amazing.
For lunch, try their La Tejana Quickie Special: It’s 2 tacos made with your choice of meat and served with rice and beans. The meat choices include: steak, carnitas (shredded, roast pork), Chorizo (sausage), tinga (shredded chicken with tomatoes, chilies and onions), Campechano (steak and chorizo blend), grilled chicken, al pastor (pork w/ pineapple), and chicharrón (fried pork crackling). For a little extra you can have it with goat, beef tongue, tripe, or cabeza (that’s cow head)! It doesn’t get more authentic or delicious. La Tejana was recently named in MSN’s Best Taco in Every State as the best in Missouri. They particularly recommended the campechano, calling it “the best [sic] of two worlds: steak and chorizo, all mixed up on one perfect taco.”
Customers agree, giving this little taco joint in Bridgeton 4.5 stars. Besides the tacos, they rave about the tortas (sandwiches on a crusty roll). You can have it your way with choice of meat dressed up with iceberg lettuce, tomato, refried beans, avocado, jalapeño, and mayo. Or opt for one of their signature tortas, like the Torta Cubana. It’s La Tejana’s take on a classic Cuban. Theirs is made with eggs, ham, hot dog, asada, and chorizo. Feeling adventurous? Try the goat soup, tostadas de Ceviche (made with marinated raw seafood), or the sopas (thick, fried corn tortillas filled with beans, cheese, and meat). Or have some fresh tortillas and guacamole with a splash of their spicy salsa. Then wash it down with a cold Modelo Negra, or an expertly mixed margarita or michelada.
La Tejana Taqueria’s Mexican food is as authentic as it gets! They’re open Monday – Friday from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Saturday – Sunday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. This is a great stop for holiday shoppers.
