More Than a Great Shop, Olivino is a Great Place to Work

Olivino Tasting Bar Employees Say They Love Their Jobs

St. Charles, MO/October 11, 2017 (STL.News) – When a business opens in a neighborhood offering something special, something new, it’s exciting for customers.  When that business also offers a great place to work, it’s exciting for everyone.  A 2017 study by the Society for Human Resource Management examined 44 aspects of job satisfaction and 38 factors directly related to employee engagement.  They found a significant gap between what employees value in their relationship with their employers and their satisfaction with that relationship.  For instance, employees place a high value on teamwork and having their ideas respected by their bosses, yet less than 40% of employees report being satisfied with those aspects of their jobs.  One shop in the Streets of St. Charles is bucking that trend. Olivino Tasting Bar is the kind of place where the staff loves what they do along with the products they sell, and that shines through in the outstanding customer experiences that happen there.

When Debbie Baker-Oliver decided to channel her business experience and passion for excellent food into a specialty olive oil, balsamic and wine tasting shop, she set out to create something special.  She wanted to share her love of healthy ingredients, namely Ultra Premium extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and fine balsamics, with her clientele.  From the day she opened Olivino Tasting Bar at 1650 Beale Street #167, in St. Charles, she made it her business to introduce home cooks and foodies to these fine ingredients, by creating a more intimate, more personal shopping experience.  That means having a well-trained staff who care about the store and the customers they serve.

Baker-Oliver attributes the store’s success directly to the efforts of her staff, stressing how important her collaboration with her team is for business.  “I look for people who are engaging, love to help others, and are passionate about their own health and, of course, the products we sell,” she said.  Her staff says her kindness, enthusiasm, and concern for her employee’s well-being makes her a great person to work for, and Olivino a great place to work.  “My team knows that I count on them to be the face of Olivino,” she said, “and to provide our clientele with a true experience, each and every time they walk in the door.”

That’s an element of the work her employees embrace.  One of her staffers, Jaclyn Griswold Wilson, says each customer is unique, so it’s fun getting to know them and what they like.  “I ask them a bunch of questions about their cooking and eating habits,” Jaci said.  “I try not to make the same mix for each customer, because no one is the same and no one is going to like the same thing.”

Her co-worker, Lauren James says getting to know the customers is her favorite part of the job too.  “It’s also a great feeling when you come up with a certain pairing of EVOO and balsamic and the customer lights up with joy and can’t wait to get home and try them out,” she said.  “Olivino is not like most retail stores,” she added.  “At Olivino we take the time to really get to know our customers and make bonds with them, making it a special experience for them.”

Baker-Oliver says she knows she’s fortunate to have such an enthusiastic team.  She credits them with Olivino’s early success and its bright future.  Along with their great customer service skills, Baker-Oliver tries to utilize the other skills they bring to the workplace.  She says a good example is Tyler McBrayer, who is a very good artist.  Baker-Oliver has tapped him to help out with creative graphics for the business.  She also praises his creativity, like the monthly Sunday Funday Bloody Mary Bar.  Tyler loves experimenting and coming up with new ways to use the products—something his boss says he excels at.  For his part, Tyler says he likes having the opportunity to be part of the decision-making process.  He and the rest of the staff appreciate the trust Baker-Oliver puts in them to help grow her business.

That trust goes both ways at Olivino.  Lauren says it’s great to have a boss who is “there for us if we need anything.”  Daniella Soriano calls Baker-Oliver a great mentor.  “She is very dedicated and most of all cares about her employees a lot,” she said.  “We are all just lucky to have her guidance and work with such a great boss.”  Jaci agrees, saying, “Debbie, is kind, understanding, generous, loving, and a serious role model.”

Olivino Tasting Bar is a unique business, and a great place to work, according to Daniella.  “The concept of our store is different than other specialty olive oil stores and that is what I love about it,” she said.  “We are just proud to be working for such a cool place that truly cares about people and gives you genuine hospitality.”  It’s a sentiment the rest of the staff shares.

“I am very fortunate to have such a talented team of people,” Baker-Oliver said.  In fact, she’s looking to add to the team.  Olivino Tasting Bar has openings for part-time sales associates.  They’re looking for candidates with creative minds and a “can do” attitude, who are honest, dependable, love food, and are willing to learn.  Because Olivino sells wine, beer and other delicious specialty cocktails, applicants must be at least 21 years of age.  Get more information on the Olivino website.

Olivino Tasting Bar is proof that a happy workplace translates into great customer experiences—and that’s good for everyone.
