Exciting Awareness Project Puts the Spotlight on Down Syndrome

Local Celebrities Help Raise Awareness about Down Syndrome in The Video Series The Scoop

St. Louis, MO/December 24, 2017 (STL.News) –What do a St. Louis restaurant owner, Cardinals player, St. Louis Zoo keeper, and Planetarium manager all have in common?  They are all part of an exciting awareness project started by the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis (DSAGSL), a non-profit organization that works to benefit the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families through individual and family support, education, public awareness, and advocacy.

Earlier this year, the organization started “The Scoop”, a video series created to raise awareness about the many abilities, varied interests, and captivating personalities of individuals with Down syndrome.  The genetic disorder triggered by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21 is usually associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features and mild to moderate intellectual disability.

Currently 1 in 691 babies are born with Down syndrome, making it the most commonly occurring genetic anomaly.  With medical advances, appropriate education, and social acceptance, those with Down syndrome are capable of excelling in school, successful employment, independent living, and most importantly, being contributing members of society.

“The Scoop” features teens and adults with Down syndrome interviewing local celebrities on a variety of interesting topics.  A restaurant owner, Cardinals player, a St. Louis Zoo keeper, and Planetarium manager are all among those that have participated on series this year helping to put the spotlight on such an important topic.  The videos are posted on social media bringing attention to the many capabilities of individuals with Down syndrome that so often go unnoticed.

For the holiday season, 41-year-old St. Charles resident, Scott Williams got “The Scoop” from the most famous holiday celebrity around – Ole’ Saint. Scott was excited to sit down with Santa Claus to ask him the questions many of us have wondered since childhood. Why come down the chimney? Is your bag of gifts very heavy? Do you prefer eggnog or apple cider? Scott and Santa laugh and have a great time while discussing the magic of the holiday. Bring a little more love to your holiday season by watching Scott interview Santa at https://youtu.be/sDvvVRNxHxE.
