Columbia Missouri News: Commercial Structure Fire at City of Columbia Landfill

COLUMBIA, MO – The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm at 5700 Peabody Road, Columbia City Landfill, building 5485, at 4:29am on Saturday, December 8, 2018.

The first unit arrived approximately five minutes later and observed no fire or smoke coming from the building.  They did discover heavy smoke conditions upon entering the building and upgraded to a full box alarm, requesting more personnel and equipment.  Crews deployed a preconnected hoseline and performed an interior fire attack.  They found fire in a piece of mechanical equipment and were able to contain it to that unit.

Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McGruder responded to perform a fire origin and cause investigation.  The area of origin was the mechanical equipment.  The cause was a malfunction in the equipment that is still under investigation.  Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Seven units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call.  There were no reported injuries.
