Bureau of Land Management to conduct prescribed fire in McKinley, Sandoval Counties

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (STL.News) – Beginning Aug. 12–Sept. 30, the Bureau of Land Management Rio Puerco Field Office plans to conduct a prescribed fire in McKinley and Sandoval counties, weather permitting.

The approximately 500-acre area, known as Mesa Chivato, is comprised of ponderosa pine, piñon and juniper trees within the Ignacio Chavez and Chamisa Wilderness Study Areas, located west of Highway 550 and 15 miles southwest of San Luis, N.M. During the days of the burn, prescribed fire signs will be posted along BLM Road 1103.  The smoke may be visible from Highway 550.

The goal of this project is to reduce the density of the forests and woodlands, and hazardous accumulations of vegetation, that under the right conditions could contribute to high intensity wildfire.
