The event got underway on Tuesday at Dwight Davis Tennis Center. Fans are cheering on these athletes in their quest to win. About 125 players from around the world have traveled to the Gateway City to compete.
Stephanie Amant, the Volunteer Coordinator for the event said these athletes are truly an inspiration, “They continue to live life and take risks and be motivated and be athletic despite their disabilities.”
Amant added that the dedication and determination of these athletes sends a powerful message, “It’s an inspiration to people with injuries and even able bodied people. We think we have a bad day and we see these people with these injuries and disabilities get out there and participate in a physically grueling sport. They’re amazing.”
Stephane Houdet is seeking to complete a hat-trick of titles at the US Open. The 46-year-old Frenchman has earned victories in the 2015 and 2016 finals against 23-year-old Argentinian Gustavo Fernandez.
Other athletes confirmed for entry in the St Louis tournament include the Briton one place behind Fernandez in the ITF rankings, Rio 2016 singles champion Gordon Reid, and Houdet’s compatriot Nicolas Peifer.
Thirty-two players are expected to compete in the men’s singles draw and 24 in the women’s singles. A total of 16 pairs will contest the men’s doubles, and 12 are scheduled to compete in the women’s doubles. In the quads section, there are 24 in the main draw, with 12 in the doubles.
Twenty countries are represented in this year’s event.
The championships wrap up on Sunday.
